Michael Weilacher (Germany), drums

Michael Weilacher, born 1969 in Rochester, New York studied at the Eastman School of Music and at the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, where he performed as a drummer in various Rock groups and orchestras. In 1991 he moved to Rotterdam and received his masters degree at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music. In Europe he increasingly focussed on contemporary and improvised music and worked with different performance groups and ensembles including Ictus Ensemble, Blindman Quartet and De Rosas in Brussels, Musique Nouvelle in Mons, Musikfabrik (Cologne), the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders and the Flamish Opera in Antwerp). His solo career as percussionist had him work with composers such as Steve Reich, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Volker Staub, Frederic Rzewski, Karel Goeyvaerts, Franscesca Verunelli, Sarah Nemtsov, Clara Maïda and Oscar Bianchi.

For some years, Weilacher lives in Berlin, plays as a solo guest performer with Sasha Waltz@Guests, performs with ensembles such as the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Work in Progress, United Berlin, Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, Ensemble Kollektiv and the Musikfabrik NRW. Since 2014 he is a constant member of the Berlin Piano Percussion Ensembles and performs regularly with the Ali Askin Jazz Quintett. Weilacher works as studio musician and writes own compositions for films and performances.
